Core Web Vitals explained for business owners
You don't need to become a performance engineer. You need to know which three numbers to ask for, and refuse to launch without them.
Google's Core Web Vitals are three measurements of whether a page feels fast and stable. They affect rankings and they affect whether a prospect stays long enough to read the headline.
The three numbers
LCP — Largest Contentful Paint
How long until the main thing on the page appears. Target: under 2.5 seconds. Heavy hero images and slow fonts are the usual villains.
INP — Interaction to Next Paint
How long until the page reacts after a click or tap. Target: under 200 milliseconds. Bloated JavaScript is the usual villain.
CLS — Cumulative Layout Shift
Whether things jump around as the page loads. Target: under 0.1. Ads, late images, and fonts that swap late are the usual villains.
What we refuse to ship
Oversized images, decoration that blocks the first paint, and plugin piles. Speed is a design decision. If a motion or image misses the threshold, it doesn't go live.
